WPC & Laminate Flooring

Wooden flooring supplied and laid — waterproof WPC planks where moisture is a concern, and hard-wearing laminate everywhere else. Click-lock planks go straight over a sound existing floor, so a room is usually done in a day.

WPC or laminate — which to lay

Laminate is an HDF core with a printed decor layer and a wear coat on top. It looks excellent, comes in AC3 and AC4 wear ratings for domestic and heavy-traffic use, and is the cheaper of the two. Its weakness is standing water — a flooded bathroom or a balcony will swell the core. WPC planks have a polymer core instead, so they are genuinely waterproof and can go in a washroom, a balcony or a ground-floor room that takes damp. We will normally suggest laminate through bedrooms and living areas, and WPC anywhere water is a real risk.

Laying over what is already there

Both are click-lock floating floors, which means the planks lock to each other rather than being glued to the slab. On a sound, level tile or concrete floor they can be laid directly over the top with a foam underlay between — no breaking, no debris and no re-levelling. We check the floor for level first, because a floating floor over an uneven base will flex and click underfoot however good the plank is.

The details that decide how it looks

An expansion gap is left around the perimeter so the floor can move with temperature, then covered with matching skirting or beading — the joint you can see in a badly laid floor is almost always a skipped expansion gap. Planks are laid running towards the main light source, with the joints staggered so the pattern does not repeat, and cut around door frames rather than butted up against them.

Common questions

Can flooring be laid over my existing tiles?
Yes, provided the tiles are sound and reasonably level. Click-lock planks float over the top with an underlay between, so nothing has to be broken out.
Is laminate flooring waterproof?
Water-resistant, not waterproof — it will handle spills but not standing water. Use WPC planks in bathrooms, balconies and any room prone to damp.
How long does a room take?
A typical bedroom is laid in a day, including underlay and beading, as long as the floor underneath is level and the room is cleared.
